The Indifferent Mazda RX-8

Every now and then there are certain cars that come into the market that quite literally just stand out from the rest. These cars often contain something visually indifferent and this is usually in the form of the exterior; perhaps a bigger sized spoiler or different coloured neon lights etc. However, in the case of the Mazda RX-8, this is a car that came into the market offering much more than just an updated outer shell. Sure it did offer some new innovations such as the 2-way door opening system and it was also visually stunning. However, it was underneath the bonnet where the real magic came into being as the RX-8 included the infamous rotary engine that Mazda were universally renowned for creating. Of course, the RX-8 wasn’t the only Mazda car to have this in place (the used Mazda RX-2, RX-3, RX-4 and RX-5 all incorporated this feature), but it was the RX-8 that really made people sit up and take notice of this truly fantastic piece of engine engineering. Much of this success was attributed to the fact that Mazda had indeed entered into a gimmicky marketing campaign that incorporated the used of the now universal “Zoom-Zoom” slogan, which immediately became associated with new and used Mazda vehicles. The cars’ top speed was pegged at roughly 150 mph and it was able to achieve 0 to 60 mph in around six seconds; making it an adventurous auto for one that included only a 1.3 litre engine! Of course with the rotary engine this meant that the equivalent was more like a 2.6 litre engine but let’s not spoil the fun! One negative that drivers do speak of, however, is that the used Mazda RX-8 is a bit of a fuel guzzler. And so with petrol prices seemingly increasing by the day, it is worth taking into consideration. Removing this disadvantage for a moment, the RX-8 is highly regarded by many and makes for an excellent choice when buying a used Mazda.
